John has more than 35 years of training experience, representing over 49,000 hours of personal training sessions. He remains an active tri-strength athlete as he approaches age 60.
He competes as a Masters Physique athlete in both the NPC and the INBA Natural League. Since 2009, members of his physique team have earned more than 57 trophies. John is also an active powerlifter who previously held California state records in the deadlift and bench press with USA Powerlifting (USAPL).
His third area of strength expertise is Weightlifting (Olympic Style), in which he has competed at national and international levels. His competitions include the 2018 Masters Pan American Championships in Quebec, Canada; the 2019 American Open in Daytona Beach, Florida; and the 2019 Masters World Cup in San Diego, where he earned a bronze medal. After a five-year break from competitive lifting, John returned to the national stage in 2025 and has since earned seven gold medals.
John’s active credentials include NASM certification, USA Weightlifting Club Coach, Club Director, Athlete Development Model (ADM), and SafeSport. Previous certifications include ACE, Pilates Floor I, and Flexibility Specialist. He also served as a fitness educator, tester, and instructor for W.I.T.S. personal training certification courses.
His fitness career includes 10 years as a part-time independent trainer, four years with 24 Hour Fitness, and more than 20 years as a full-time independent trainer. He owned and operated a 2,000-square-foot training facility and later partnered with Sunnyvale Health and Fitness. Before personal training, John spent more than 11 years in manufacturing roles at Silicon Graphics, Applied Materials, and Indala, a division of Motorola.
